Carl Sagan told us that there are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on all of the Earth's beaches. At the same time, there are more H2O molecules in just 10 drops of water than there are stars. Ranging from the unimaginably small to the unimaginably big, the scale of the universe is mind-boggling. Watch to try to wrap your head around it.

The Immeasurable Universe, Our home supercluster... Laniakea!

Thanks to the recent work of a team of researchers at the University of Hawaii, we now have an even better of idea of just how tiny our little lives are in the big picture of the universe. In fact, as a new model for mapping the movement of galaxies has revealed, the cluster of galaxies that is home to planet earth may be around 100 times bigger than previously thought... Superclusters– regions of space that are densely packed with galaxies – are the biggest structures in the Universe. But scientists have struggled to define exactly where one supercluster ends and another begins.

Now, a team based in Hawaii has come up with a new technique that maps the Universe according to the flow of galaxies across space. Redrawing the boundaries of the cosmic map, they redefine our home supercluster and name it Laniakea, which means ‘immeasurable heaven’ in Hawaiian.
